TODAY WE CELEBRATE THE FEAST OF SAINT LEANDER

Today, November 13, the Church commemorates the feast of Saint Leander of Seville. For this reason, his relics will be displayed in the Cathedral chapel that bears his name.

Leander of Seville (c. 536-602), bishop of Seville and considered a Saint, played a crucial role in the conversion of the Visigoths to Catholicism. Until then, the Visigoths followed the Arian doctrine, which denied the divinity of Christ. Thanks to his preaching, he convinced Saint Hermenegild, son of King Leovigild, to adopt the Catholic faith, also contributing to the conversion of another son of the monarch, Recaredo, who later made Catholicism the official religion of the Visigothic kingdom after the Third Council of Toledo.

Saint Leander and his historical-artistic legacy in the Cathedral of Seville

La memoria de San Leandro, figura fundamental en la historia de la Iglesia hispalense, permanece íntimamente vinculada a la Catedral de Sevilla, donde sus restos reposan junto a los de su hermano, San Isidoro.

The Cathedral also houses the Chapel of San Leandro, dedicated exclusively to the saint. This space stands out for its baroque façade and an altarpiece that illustrates relevant episodes of his life, offering the faithful and visitors a visual tour of the history of the Sevillian bishop.

In addition to his chapel, the Cathedral preserves valuable artistic works that represent Saint Leander. Among them, portraits made by the Sevillian painter Bartolomé Esteban Murillo and a carving attributed to the sculptor Duque Cornejo from the 18th century stand out, demonstrating the importance of the Saint both in popular devotion and in the history of Sevillian art.
