Restoration of the procession mantle of Nuestra Señora de los Reyes (and her Son)
As part of the annual conservation and improvement plan for the historical-artistic heritage so prized by the Cathedral, a restoration is planned for the green procession mantle of Nuestra Señora de los Reyes.
The preliminary study on this piece was carried out on 14 August, 2019 and through that study, the main technical information was gathered, as well as the state of its conservation, and the proposed procedures, following the methodology recommended by the international bodies that champion heritage conservation under criteria that place value on the work, its symbology, and the extent of its deterioration.
The restoration of these pieces will be undertaken in the distinguished workshop Sucesores de Esperanza Elena Caro, specialists in gold and silk embossing and in the conservation and restoration of textiles. This will all be done under the coordination and technical direction of Carlota Elena Meléndez and the monitoring of the conservator of the Cathedral’s assets.
The planned timeline is fifteen months with a budget of €75,000, which will be subsidized in its entirety by the Metropolitan Chapter thanks to the support of cultural visits.
INFORMATION ABOUT THE PIECE
It was donated by Queen Isabel II and created in 1853 in Madrid in the studio of Hermanas Gilart. It is possible that the work followed a design by Manuel González Salgado and forms part of an ensemble of singular importance to the textile heritage of the Cathedral, not just for being a work of great quality and richness, but by being a remarkable example of the production of the studio of Hermanas Gilart.
