THE ORGAN: RECENT HISTORY

The Grand Choir Organs of Seville Cathedral, located below the transverse arches that flank the quire, have since the beginning of the 20th century comprised one single instrument, which sounds from both cases (Antigua side and San Francisco side). It consists of one hundred stops divided between four manuals and pedal, controlled from one console, thanks to the electrical connection between the two pieces, implemented for the first time in Spain (1901) by Basque organ-builder D. Aquilino Amezua, builder of this instrument.

This organ was preceded by six other instruments over the 500 years of our Cathedral’s existence: those constructed by Brother Juan, (1479), D. Francisco Ortiguez (1733), and D. Valentín Verdalonga (1831) on the Evangelio side and those built by Sir Jors (1579), D. Diego de Orío (1725), and D. Jordi Bosch on the Epistle side.

In 1973, the Spanish organ builder D. Ramón González Amezua completed a complete rebuild/modernization.

Twenty-three years later, in 1996, with the support/backing/patronage of the Real Maestranza de Caballería de Sevilla, the German organ builder Gerhard Grenzing would target an extremely important renovation. Since then, the instrument has received regular maintenance.

Due to its size and quality, the cathedral organ is, by its own merit, an omnipresent and irreplaceable instrument in any ceremony or prominent event, and its stature matches the grandiose and unequaled Cathedral of Seville.
