KEYNOTE SPEECH BY ALFONSO JIMÉNEZ, ARCHITECT-CURATOR OF THE CATHEDRAL BETWEEN 1987 AND 2014

Cathedral staff continues attending various study days as part of the Internal Training Plan set forth by the Metropolitan Council in 2024. To that end, the lecture“From Mosque to Cathedral” took place in the San Clemente room presented by Adrián Ríos, Chapter delegate for pastoral activities and staff and delivered by Alfonso Jiménez Martín, 26th Senior Master of Seville’s Metropolitan Cathedral.

His lecture revolved around how in 1248, after the conquering of Seville by Fernando III de Castilla, the mosque was consecrated as a Cathedral and converted to adapt it to new needs, among which were the organization of a Royal Chapel to serve as a vault for the Blessed King and his son Alfonso X el Sabio.

The majority of the mosque was demolished to make way for the current gothic church whose construction began in the first half of the 15th century. The records from this era are exceptional for the rigor, precision, and comprehensiveness, even providing the names of three of its “authors” (Aḥmad b. Bāsu, cAlī  al-Gumārī y Abū l-Layṯ al-Siqīllī) and suggesting one other (al-Hayy Ya’is). In 1433, the huge gothic project began and was, broadly speaking, finished in 1506. It was headed by a successive series of architects whose names and dates we know exactly, among them: Jehan Ysanbert (1433-1434), Pedro García (1434-1435), Charles Gauter de Ruán (1435-1447),  Antoni Dalmau (1446-1449), Juan Normán (1449-1478) , Francisco Rodríguez de Sevilla (1478-1482), Juan de Hoces  (1482-1496), Simón de Colonia (1495-1499) and Alonso Rodríguez (1496-1512).

Alfonso Jiménez shared his knowledge in an enjoyable and instructive way, garnering great interest and attendance from Cathedral staff.

This presentation continues contributing to the cultural enrichment as well as strengthening and tightening bonds between the Cathedral and its workers.
