The Cathedral Chapter of Seville is actively participating in the exhibition “Seville and the Wedding of Charles V”, an initiative promoted by Seville City Council as part of the commemorative program for the fifth centenary of the marriage between Charles V and Isabella of Portugal. The exhibition will take place at Espacio Santa Clara from March 26, 2026, to May 30.
The exhibition, curated by Alfredo J. Morales, Professor of Art History at the University of Seville, offers a dual perspective on this historical milestone. On one hand, it commemorates the historic wedding held in the city; on the other, it highlights the artistic and cultural splendor of Seville during the first third of the 16th century, a key period in its historical development.
The Cathedral Chapter stands out as one of the most significant collaborating institutions, thanks to the loan of an important collection of pieces from its historical-artistic heritage. These include works of great value such as the Keys to the City of Seville, the sculpture of Saint John the Baptist / King David, the painting Dormition of the Virgin by Marcellus Coffermans, and the delicate carving of the Virgin and Child.
Furthermore, outstanding examples of goldwork and decorative arts will be on display, such as the chalice of Cardinal Diego Hurtado de Mendoza, the Serpent Ewer, the Paiva Fountain, and the Antwerp Pitcher. The selection is completed by highly significant textile and liturgical pieces, such as the processional litter cloth and the cope attributed to Charles V, along with sculptural works like the Saint Gregory by Nicolás de León.
