Today, August 28, the Catholic Church celebrates the feast of Saint Augustine of Hippo, one of the great pillars of Christianity and a Father of the Church. In Seville Cathedral, this day is reflected in a special way through its artistic heritage, which was designed from its origins with a clear evangelizing and liturgical intent.
Within the temple, a stained-glass window created by master Enrique Alemán in 1479 stands out. It depicts Saint Augustine alongside the other three great Doctors of the Western Church: Saint Gregory, Saint Ambrose, and Saint Jerome. This Gothic work of art allows exterior light to illuminate the interior of the aisles, serving as a visual catechesis for the faithful and visitors.
Born in the year 354 in Tagaste, Saint Augustine is recognized for his intense search for the Truth, his spiritual life, and a theological legacy fundamental to the Church. His image in the stained glass evokes the soul’s inner journey toward God, summarized in his most famous phrase:
“You have made us for Yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in You” (Confessions, I, 1).
Contemplating this historic stained-glass window invites contemplation within the temple, recalling a spiritual and cultural heritage that remains alive in the Cathedral.
