THE CATHEDRAL TEMPORARILY HOSTS EL GRECO’S WORK SANTA MARÍA MAGDALENA

The transfer will guarantee the conservation of the canvas during the restoration of the church of San Eutropio de Paradas and will offer the public an artistic dialogue with a work by Artemisia Gentileschi.

The Cathedral will temporarily incorporate into its exhibition space the painting Santa María Magdalena, a work by Doménikos Theotokópoulos, El Greco, owned by the Parish of San Eutropio de Paradas. The initiative coincides with the imminent start of the restoration work on the parish church, which is why the piece will be moved to ensure its proper conservation during the development of the work.

The temporary transfer not only responds to heritage protection criteria, but will also allow the faithful and visitors of the Cathedral to contemplate one of the most significant works linked to the artistic, historical and devotional heritage of the town of Paradas. It is a canvas of extraordinary value, deeply rooted in the spiritual and cultural tradition of the municipality.

The painting will be located in the exhibition area of the Cathedral Pavilion, where it can be seen next to another emblematic work dedicated to the same dedication: the María Magdalena by Artemisia Gentileschi. This arrangement proposes a suggestive artistic dialogue between two great figures of universal painting and two different—but complementary—views on the figure of Santa María Magdalena, from different contexts, styles and sensibilities.

With this initiative, the Cathedral reinforces its commitment to the conservation, dissemination and enhancement of ecclesiastical heritage, promoting its knowledge and enjoyment in a framework that combines protection, dissemination and cultural excellence. The temporary exhibition is thus presented as a unique opportunity to approach two masterful interpretations of one of the most representative figures of Christian iconography.
