As a result of institutional collaboration, the Royal and Illustrious Brotherhood and Confraternity of Nazarenes of the Sacred Column and Scourging of Our Lord Jesus Christ and Most Holy Mary of Victory has loaned to the Cathedral’s Neoclassical Pavilion a canvas of exceptional value: “The Coronation of the Virgin”, a work by the celebrated Sevillian painter Domingo Martínez (1688-1749).
A key eighteenth-century work
The canvas, which forms part of the heritage of the Tobacco Factory Chapel, was identified in 1998 by Professor Enrique Valdivieso, who dated its execution between 1730 and 1740. Domingo Martínez, a central figure in Sevillian painting of the period and author of the paintings in the Chapel of the Virgin of Antigua in this Cathedral, displays in this piece a perfect synthesis between Murillo’s legacy and the refinement of French painting at the court of Philip V.
Technical and iconographic description
The work, measuring 176 x 134 cm, presents a balanced triangular composition presided over by the Holy Spirit. At the centre, Mary is crowned by God the Father and Jesus Christ with a diadem of twelve stars. The scene, of undoubted Murillesque influence in its court of angels, follows the iconographic tradition of the Assumption, reminding us of the theological meaning of the insertion of the human into Trinitarian love.
With this loan, Seville Cathedral temporarily enriches its exhibition pavilion, offering the faithful and visitors the opportunity to contemplate one of the most significant pieces of Martínez’s production in his mature period.
