SEVILLE CATHEDRAL HAS ACQUIRED THREE NEW AMPHORAE FOR THE HOLY OILS

Seville Cathedral adds three new silver amphorae to its artistic and liturgical heritage. A commission from the Metropolitan Chapter intended for altar service.

The new pieces, intended for the storage and transfer of the Holy Oils, have been crafted by the Seville workshop of Jesús Domínguez.

These amphorae have been specifically designed to safeguard the Holy Chrism, the Oil of Catechumens, and the Oil of the Sick, essential elements in the administration of the sacraments. Their debut took place during the Chrism Mass on the past Holy Tuesday, one of the most solemn celebrations in the Christian calendar.

The aforementioned workshop employed traditional chiseling and repoussé techniques in sterling silver. The new amphorae stand out for their formal balance and the richness of their iconography, befitting the dignity of the sacred oils they will hold.

With this commission, the Cathedral not only updates its liturgical utensils but also maintains its historic commitment to artistic patronage and support for Seville’s artisan crafts.
