The Dean of the Cathedral Chapter of Seville, Francisco José Ortiz Bernal, and the Managing Director of the Royal Tapestry Factory, Alejandro Klecker de Elizalde, have signed the contract for the commissioning, execution, and acquisition of a carpet for the Main Altar of Seville Cathedral. The signing will take place next Tuesday, April 28, at 11:00 AM at Seville Cathedral.
Under this agreement, the Royal Tapestry Factory will weave a 127-square-meter carpet on a high-warp loom using the Turkish knot technique. The finishing will be done manually through “recorteado” (trimming), which allows the design to be outlined with great precision and enhances its ornamental richness.
For its creation, materials of the highest quality will be used: 100% Merino wool for the knot, 100% jute for the weft, and 100% cotton for the warp.
Delivery of the piece is scheduled for October 2027, taking into account the time required for manufacturing, once the subsequent assembly of the fragments that make up the carpet is completed, as well as any other technical process essential for its proper completion.
About the presentation ceremony
During the ceremony, the Dean of the Cathedral Chapter of Seville, Francisco José Ortiz Bernal, stated that: this commission is part of a set of comprehensive conservation actions scheduled for the Cathedral’s main altar for next year, which will culminate in the placement of this large carpet that will enrich the existing heritage of the Cathedral in the service of the liturgy.
For his part, the Managing Director of the Royal Tapestry Factory, Alejandro Klecker de Elizalde, highlighted the significance of this commission, noting: “It is an honor that an institution with the historical, artistic, and spiritual value of Seville Cathedral places its trust in the Royal Tapestry Factory. This project represents the continuity of centuries of artisanal excellence in the service of heritage and demonstrates that traditional crafts remain fully relevant when quality, knowledge, and a commitment to permanence come together.”
