Members of the Cathedral Chapter visit the exhibition “Seville and the Wedding of Charles V” at Santa Clara

The Dean of the Cathedral, Francisco José Ortiz Bernal, and the Delegate for Administration and Heritage, Francisco Román Castro, have visited the exhibition “Seville and the Wedding of Charles V” at Espacio Santa Clara. During the tour, they received explanations from the exhibition’s curator, Professor J. Alfredo Morales Martínez. This cultural initiative, which opened on March 26, will remain open to the public until May 30.

The exhibition is part of the commemorative program for the fifth centenary of the imperial marriage between Charles V and Isabella of Portugal, celebrated in Seville in 1526. The Seville Cathedral Chapter stands as one of the project’s most prominent collaborating institutions, promoted by the Seville City Council, by lending an exceptional collection of its historical-artistic heritage for visitors’ enjoyment, such as the valuable textile and liturgical pieces contributed, among which the Pluvial Cope of Charles V stands out.

This masterpiece of European textile art is the same historical garment that the monarch wore during his imperial coronation in Aachen in 1520. Brought expressly to Seville for his wedding at the Royal Alcazars, this textile jewel is extraordinarily displayed in this temporary exhibition before returning to its permanent display case inside the Cathedral. Alongside it, a historic processional canopy cloth can also be seen.

In addition to the emperor’s textile legacy, the exhibition also features other pieces loaned by the Chapter, such as the emblematic Keys to the City of Seville, the sculpture of Saint John the Baptist/King David, Marcelo Coffermans’ painting of the Dormition of the Virgin, or the delicate carving of the Virgin and Child. Regarding goldsmithery, it includes Cardinal Diego Hurtado de Mendoza’s chalice, the Jarro de la Sierpe, the Fuente de Paiva, and the Antwerp pitcher, along with sculptural works such as Nicolás de León’s Saint Gregory.

With this notable participation, the Cathedral Chapter reaffirms its collaboration with other institutions and its commitment to disseminating the history, faith, and artistic heritage it safeguards.
